How to put a remote for a CANON A80.
That way you will be able to remotely focus, lock focus, take a picture and lock the release button.
First things first, I
cannot be held responsible for anything happening to your camera.
Should you
break the ribbon cables or put solder on the circuits, well…
too bad, go buy
some better hands :-)
This operation will
obviously void the warranty.
Now folks, shall wee proceed ?

| This is the CANON A80. The goal of the operation is to provide a remote control for the focus and the shooting button. Better than what most SLR offer, which is only a shooting remote, usually called "bulb". Since we have push buttons, why not put flip buttons as well to lock the focus for example, or to let the fast shooting mode fill up the memory card without having the inprint of the push button in our tender thumb meat :) We will want to add the remote functionnality without making a mess of the appearance of the camera, and without having protruding elements, but we still want to be able to use the camera normally without the remote. We need to be able to plug the remote somewhere. After opening a dead A95 (fell in salt water and couldn't be rescued in time...), i could not see any space where to put a jack. I checked to see if i could reuse the A/V jack (never used the function), but it is really a pain to access the solder points without unmounting everything inside. and beleive me when i tell you that you do not want to mess around with the ribon cables inside.... |
| After turning the camera in every way i could, i finally found a couple spaces that i could use. First, is right above the microphone, this would involve drilling the case... not really nice. The sapce is very limited and i couldn't find any jack small enough to fit. Even in place of the Mic, which could be moved somewhere else, or even dumped. the space is too little. Finally it struck me !! What is that lens above the screen ? WHAAAA an eyepiece.... never used it : unpractical for my macro shoots or when the camera is on the tripod. It doesn't have any infos about the settings. It is much easier to use the screen.... Some will argue about the battery life... well, rechargeable AA batteries are dirt cheap, and regular AA batteries are everywhere. Dumping the eyepiece is really easy, and you'll get plenty enough room for a nice jack. Let's do it ! |
